Balayage or Highlights? What’s best? Or should I go Hybrid? 3 mistakes people make and how to avoid them

The term Balayage means to sweep, so the colour is swept through the hair with a Freehand Technique. That is only one technique in an all encompassing myriad of techniques under the heading Balayage. There are three basic mistakes people make when choosing a Balayage technique here’s how To avoid them!

Three common mistakes when choosing a Balayage technique

  • Client's assume all Balayage includes colouring the roots

  • The hair is already coloured

  • The client assumes that the  Instagram picture is achievable

Not all Balayage appointments include a base colour. However, nearly every picture you see will be double Processed. Let's be honest here the Instagram picture you saw looked great. The problem is the description, #easy but is it?

I would suggest booking an appointment with your favourite stylist for a consultation. They can then explain every option to you, at least that's what you should expect. I've seen many stylists running around like a chicken without a head! Why?. Because a new client has booked a Balayage online, the stylist is unsure if they want one colour or two. Have they had a skin test? Yada yada yada

I always tell them to phone the client and book a consultation, and the opposite is true, so book a  before the appointment. I learned over the years never to assume anything. My idea of Blonde and your idea of Blonde may be different. Communication is everything and you can make sure you get what you want by communicating with your hairdresser.

If your hair is already coloured you may need to do a strand test. Tint won't lighten tint and it's important that your stylist Explainsyour options.

It's great that we have the ability to show our hairdresser pictures. As stylists they make our lives so much easier, a picture does say a thousand words! It can also hide a thousand secrets. That picture that says wash and go probably took hours to achieve. Again I have the same advice book a consultation.

As you may have noticed, I'm a big fan of communication; without exception, the best stylists are usually excellent communicators.
